Mosquitoes are the worst enemy of a peaceful summer evening. And their worst enemy can be a few bushels of mosquito repellent flowers and herbs. Here are the best ones!
Marigold
Thanks to its pungent scent, marigold keeps mosquitoes away, and some varieties even repel flies. These flowers can also be planted in pots and window boxes, so they can be used on balconies to protect against insects.
Lemongrass and citronella
Pick a few leaves from a lemongrass bush, rub slightly and place them in a bowl in the bedroom to ensure a mosquito-free night. Citronella is also a relative of lemongrass and mint. It is therefore one of the best mosquito repellent plants.
Mint varieties
The smell of catnip is not tolerated by mosquitoes and other pesky insects. Peppermint and spearmint are also mosquito repellents, and the dried leaves of these plants can be used to make herbal tea.
Coleus
Coleus is a fast-growing plant that can also be grown in pots and window boxes, and it has a camphorous fragrance making it suitable to use against flying insects. Watering is important, avoiding stagnant water underneath. It repays care by repelling not only mosquitoes but also moths and flies.
Coleus flowers from June to the end of August. Its smell is repugnant for most pests, even mosquitoes.
Rosemary, sage, basil
The aromatic scent of these herbs makes them great mosquito repellents. Mosquito larvae don’t thrive in an environment with basil. After a summer evening barbecue, throwing a sprig of rosemary on the coals can chase all the insects away for hours.
