Lithuanian photographer Eugenijus Kavaliauskas once again showed what an insect looks like from up close – an insect one often sees during nature walks, but no one wants to meet it, let alone get to know it more closely. This is nothing but the common tick.

Although the talented photographer won prizes in several contests, his super-close-up photo of an ant’s face became very popular on the Internet, and that’s actually how he became known to everyone.

No wonder, as it turns out that an ant looks like the Uruk-Hai warriors known from The Lord of the Rings. However, not so long ago the face of the common tick (Ixodes Ricinus) was also caught on camera, offering a remarkable image of its stinging and sucking mouthparts.

This species of tick is the most common in Europe. It’s the one that spreads various diseases, including viral meningitis and Lyme disease, which can also be caught by dogs. Ticks can not only fall down from trees, but also climb up from the dense undergrowth onto humans or animals – in fact, the latter occurs more often.

Everyone should check themselves after a trip, because the sooner you remove the tick, the less chance there is of the parasite passing on the infection.
