Are there any anti-heatwave foods? What do we eat when it’s really hot? What foods should we avoid in hot weather?
Usually in hot weather we get used to losing our appetite, which can lead to a feeling of malaise or faintness.
Anti-heatwave foods
Watermelon
As well as hydrating you, watermelon also contains lycopene, a compound that can protect from the sun’s harmful rays. It’s low in calories and can be enjoyed cold and at room temperature.
Cucumber
It’s refreshing and it’s 95% water. Eating cucumbers will help you get over the unpleasant effects of a heatwave more quickly. You’ll be hydrated and refreshed.
Lettuce
With a water content of 80-95%, lettuce is easy to digest and extremely hydrating in hot weather. It’s one of the healthiest foods to eat in the heat.
Berries
Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and cranberries are fruits high in antioxidants and fiber. They can be enjoyed in hot weather for their refreshing taste and benefits.
Hot peppers
Although they make us hot, hot peppers are perfect as a food to eat in the heat. They make us sweat and therefore cool down.
What foods to avoid in a heatwave
Alcohol
Alcohol is a diuretic, so drinking alcoholic drinks in a heatwave will cause dehydration.
Meat
Meat (even grilled) should be avoided in the heat. The human body consumes a lot of energy to digest it through a process of thermogenesis.
Ice cream
Any cold or very cold food is contraindicated in hot weather. Digesting cold food leads to an increase in body temperature to compensate for the temperature difference between inside and outside the body.
