A Catholic priest died in a tragic accident during a livestreamed Mass in Ecuador on Saturday, October 17, 2026, when a large wooden crucifix suddenly fell from the wall behind the altar and struck him. The disturbing incident unfolded in front of worshippers attending the service, while viewers watching online also witnessed the moment the cross collapsed.
The accident occurred at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was celebrating Mass. The priest was standing near the altar when the heavy crucifix, mounted on the wall behind him, unexpectedly detached and fell directly onto him.
The religious service was being broadcast live on social media. Footage circulating online shows the crucifix falling approximately 27 minutes into the ceremony, catching those present completely off guard.
Shocked worshippers immediately rushed to help the priest. Panicked voices can be heard in the recording as people desperately call for an ambulance.
Reports from Ecuadorian media indicate that the falling cross caused fatal injuries. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil subsequently confirmed Father Sánchez Molinari’s death, although its official statement did not provide medical details or clarify whether he died at the scene.
Archdiocese Confirms Priest’s Death in Heartbreaking Statement
On October 17, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil issued an official obituary signed by Cardinal Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera, the Archbishop of Guayaquil.
The statement confirmed the death of Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and expressed condolences to the Redemptorist religious community, his family, and friends.
In its tribute, the archdiocese said the priest had “gone to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and glory.”
The obituary concluded with a traditional Latin prayer: “Requiem æternam dona ei, Domine. Et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace.”
Translated into English, the prayer reads: “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.”
The church’s announcement did not explain what caused the crucifix to fall. It remains unclear whether the accident resulted from a failure in the mounting system or another structural issue.
Priest Had Been Honored Just One Day Before His Death
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, a Catholic religious order founded in 1732 by Saint Alphonsus Liguori.
The congregation is particularly associated with devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, whose name is also carried by the church where the tragedy occurred.
Originally from Cuenca, Ecuador, Father Sánchez Molinari previously served as a parish priest in Vinces, in the province of Los Ríos, before continuing his pastoral work in Guayaquil.
According to the Ecuadorian news outlet Primicias, the archdiocese had congratulated the priest on the anniversary of his ordination just one day before the fatal accident.
His sudden death has left the local Catholic community mourning, with the tragedy attracting international attention after recordings of the livestream spread across social media.
As of October 18, church authorities had not released official findings explaining why the crucifix became detached from the wall. The archdiocese’s initial statement also did not announce the date or location of the priest’s funeral.
