Homemade fig jam – better than any store-bought versions

If you have ever fig jam in a mediterranean country where this fruit grows in abundance, it may have become one of your favorites. If this is so, the good news is that if you make fig jam at home, you may realize that it tastes better than versions you can buy at stores.

If you have a garden and there is an empty, sunny spot in it, it is a great idea to plant a fig tree. Since fig trees start producing a lot of fruit within a few years, you will have plenty to make fig jam from, and you will find that homemade fig jam is very easy to make.

There is no need to peel or core the figs. Just dry it, cut it into pieces and mix the fruit with lemon juice, sugar, water and a little citrus peel. Within an hour, we’ll have a fig jam in our hands that surpasses any store-bought version.

Fig jam is a great delicacy, you can spread it on bread with butter, eat it with cheese and meat, but it can also be a great surprise as a gift.

Fig jam recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 kg ripe figs, washed and diced
  • ½ kg sugar
  • Fresh juice of 1 lemon
  • 400 ml water
  • The peels of a small orange or lemon
  • 1 package of vanilla

Preparation

Clean the figs, remove their stems, then cut them into small pieces. Then place the figs in a non-stick pan and add the sugar, lemon juice, water and citrus peels.

Mix the ingredients thoroughly and bring to a boil, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Cook the fig jam on low heat, stirring occasionally and pressing down the fig pieces into the juice, until the fruit is soft and jam-like, about 35 to 45 minutes.

When the jam is ready, spoon into the jars, close the jars tightly, cover them with blankets and let them cool to room temperature. Store the jam in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.
