More and more people are looking for an alternative to cow’s milk, some for environmental reasons, some for health reasons. Traditional dairy products cannot be consumed by people who are sensitive to either milk sugar, i.e. lactose, or milk protein, casein.

Although lactose-free dairy products are available in stores, many people prefer seed drinks, the production of which is more sustainable than products of animal origin, and their protein and mineral content is satisfactory.

If you like their taste, one problem still remains with seed drinks: they are quite expensive, and their regular consumption puts a serious burden on the wallet. Fortunately, they can be prepared at home from a few ingredients, so the costs will be minimal.

Rice drink from pennies

You can make rice drink at home in several ways. Rice is often soaked raw, but the most delicious solution is to cook half a cup of roughly 100 g of rice in twice as much water, then mix it thoroughly with three to four cups of water and strain it through a tea strainer. It can be flavored with a pinch of salt.

Besides costing very little, rice drink can be a great idea to save leftovers, by mixing naturally cooked rice left over from lunch with four times the amount of water. The drink obtained this way can be kept refrigerated for a few days. The thicker part of the liquid may settle to the bottom, so it should be stirred before use. With this recipe, you can even make a milk substitute drink from buckwheat and other grains.

Oat drink at home

Oat drink can also be prepared cheaply and without special maceration at home. For this, you need 100 g of oatmeal, which must be soaked in enough water to cover it for a few hours, or even overnight. If the oats have absorbed enough water, crush them in a blender, add 750 ml of water and blend some more, then filter. You can flavor the drink with a pinch of salt or a little sugar or sweetener. Oat drink can be kept in the fridge for a few days, and the remaining solid oats can be made into muesli bars.

Homemade almond drink

Almond drinks, becoming more and more popular, are also available at a hefty price in stores and drugstores, although almonds themselves are not cheap either. If someone has room in their garden to grow an almond tree, or if they can get it at a good price in the market, a mug of almonds can be used to make a large batch of almond drink.

Soak almonds for a few hours or overnight in as much water as it covers, then add 4 cups of water, blend thoroughly, and finally filter. The drink can be flavored with a pinch of salt, but if you use it for sweets, you can also add vanilla and sugar. It will keep in the refrigerator for three to four days, but it should be stirred thoroughly before consumption. The remaining almond paste can be used in cakes or muffins.

Based on the same method, a valuable, rich drink can be made from Turkish hazelnuts or from other oily seeds and even chestnuts.
