Sweet cravings caused by a deficiency of a single mineral in the body

If you are always craving something sweet and your period pains are severe, you may be lacking magnesium.

Besides, constipation and even anxiety are symptoms that may occur as a result of magnesium deficiency, which affects almost 70% of the population.

Magnesium deficiency and sweet cravings

The recommended daily intake of magnesium is 310-320 mg for women and 400-420 mg for men. This mineral plays an important role in maintaining vital body functions. The best magnesium-rich sources are vegetables, especially green leafy ones.

Because of diets largely based on a host of refined and highly processed products, many people suffer from magnesium deficiency, which may cause all sorts of disorders: painful menstrual cramps, headaches, muscle tension, and constipation.

Magnesium also has a strong influence on blood sugar levels and the nervous system. Magnesium deficiency can lead to excessive sweet cravings and anxiety.

Foods containing magnesium

To alleviate these symptoms, it is advisable to eat foods rich in fiber, green vegetables (kale, broccoli), nuts (especially almonds), seaweed, pumpkin, beans and cocoa as often as possible.

An adjuvant solution is an Epsom salt bath (20-30 minutes, 2-3 times a week), which is rich in magnesium sulphate, which absorbs very quickly through the skin.

Nevertheless, it is preferable to obtain nutrients through food, supplements are sometimes recommended.

Specialists recommend magnesium glycinate (100-300 mg/day for adults), which is easily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and does not cause digestive disorders.

However, do not take supplements unless recommended by your doctor, as excess can lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrheal stools.
