The tragedy unfolded on Saturday at 2 PM local time, when the boat, carrying 53 passengers, overturned during a sightseeing cruise. The accident occurred as Typhoon Wipha swept through the region, bringing fierce winds, torrential rain, and lightning across the South China Sea.

According to the local outlet VnExpress, most of the passengers were from Hanoi, the nation’s capital. Authorities have not yet disclosed the nationalities of the tourists onboard. Rescue teams remain at the scene, continuing their urgent search for survivors.

As reported by the Vietnam News Agency, 11 survivors have been rescued so far, while 34 bodies have been recovered from the water—including eight children, intensifying the emotional weight of the disaster.

Located approximately 200 kilometers northeast of Hanoi, Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam’s most celebrated tourist destinations. Renowned for its breathtaking limestone formations and emerald waters, the bay attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. Boat cruises are especially popular among tourists seeking to experience its serene beauty.

The accident has cast a dark shadow over the bay’s tranquil reputation, raising concerns about safety during unpredictable weather conditions.

Typhoon Wipha, the third named storm in the South China Sea this year, is expected to reach Vietnam’s northern coastline in the coming days. The typhoon has already triggered chaos in the skies: according to Noi Bai International Airport, nine incoming flights were rerouted to other airports, while three additional flights were grounded on Saturday for safety reasons.

Authorities have issued warnings about extreme weather conditions, urging both locals and tourists to remain vigilant as the storm continues its path.
