An Italian woman jumped from her third-floor apartment along with her three children: the woman, her 4-year-old son, and her 4-month-old infant died at the scene

In the early hours of Wednesday, April 22, a devastating tragedy unfolded in the southern Italian city of Catanzaro, where a 46-year-old woman fell from the balcony of her third-floor apartment together with her three children. The woman, her 4-year-old son, and her 4-month-old infant died at the scene, while her 6-year-old daughter survived the fall and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. She underwent emergency surgery and remains in intensive care.

According to reports from Leggo, the woman’s husband was at home at the time and attempted to intervene in the final moments.

The woman, identified as Anna Democrito, worked at the “Monsignor Apa” nursing home. Those who knew her described a reserved, deeply religious individual whose life revolved around work, family, and faith. Yet behind that outward calm, there were signs of mounting internal difficulties.

Reports indicate that she had previously experienced psychiatric disorders, which had recently worsened following the birth of her youngest child in December. According to people close to her, she was struggling with postpartum depression but refused to seek professional help.

The reason, acquaintances said, was rooted in fear-she believed that admitting her condition might lead authorities to take her children away. Despite these concerns, no official report had been filed with social services, and the family was not known to them.

At the time of the tragedy, the woman’s husband was asleep in another room. He reportedly became aware only after hearing a sudden noise. When he stepped onto the balcony and realized what had happened, he rushed downstairs.

Witnesses cited by local media said he tried to resuscitate his wife and children until emergency services arrived.

Police and forensic teams spent hours examining the apartment, working to reconstruct the sequence of events. Investigators are considering multiple possibilities, including the hypothesis of murder followed by suicide, though no conclusion has been reached.

Surveillance camera footage from the surrounding area is also being analyzed. Early reports suggest that the woman may have thrown the children first before jumping herself. Rescue workers found a rosary in her hand.

Anna Democrito was known to regularly attend her local parish, especially in the years leading up to her marriage. Following the birth of her youngest child, she had begun attending Mass more frequently again.

“She came here often, especially before she got married. She always had this fear inside her because of the children. I also encouraged her to ask for help, to let them help her, but her fear blocked her,” said the local parish priest, Don Vincenzo, to the Italian press.

“Tragedies of this magnitude never happen suddenly; rather, their roots often lie in suffering that is not always visible. That is why we believe that a shared and concrete commitment is essential,” said representatives of the Calabrian Association of Psychologists.

Regional president Roberto Occhiuto described the incident as a “huge tragedy” that “caused shock and deep distress.” The Archbishop of Catanzaro–Squillace, Claudio Maniago, подчеркнул the importance of recognizing hidden suffering and building communities capable of offering support and compassion.

The mayor of Catanzaro, Nicola Fiorita, expressed solidarity with the family and announced that a day of mourning will be observed on the day of the funeral, the date of which has yet to be determined.
