A man who was in a coma for six months has revealed the heartbreaking information he received when he woke up. The story had been covered by MEL Magazine a few months earlier, and a few days ago the man was interviewed on Reddit and new details of the incident emerged.

When John Pennington woke up from his coma after a serious brain injury in 2015, he initially thought it was just another day: he had to get out of bed and head to work. But he realized that his arms and legs were tied and he was in a hospital.

He called the nurse, who reacted to his awakening with tears in her eyes and then stormed out of the room. The man was so confused that it even entered his mind that he perhaps killed someone. After a few minutes, the nurse returned, apologized and told him that he had been in a coma for six months with a severe brain injury and that it was a miracle he had woken up.

If that wasn’t traumatic enough, the man then received shocking news: his father had committed suicide. “My father committing suicide was the biggest shock. Everything else I carried the attitude that I’ll deal with it. Losing my father was the toughest thing. Not the car, not my place, not my computer, but My Pops,” he wrote on Reddit.

Pennington also revealed that there were other problems in his family at the time. While he was in a coma, his sister struggled with drug addiction and their father tried to help her by paying her rent. The man’s sister also spoke out, saying that she had been sober for six years and that one of the hardest things she had to do in her life was to tell her sister that their father had died.

“I still celebrate his birthday and buy him a cake. My fat ass eats it, but I even serve his slice on his plate,” said Pennington, who is going through a very difficult time.
