She posted a photo of herself sitting between two men on a plane: the internet went wild

What started as a lighthearted moment on a flight quickly spiraled into an online debate that divided thousands.

Nadia Holliday, a 47-year-old real estate agent from Kentucky, shared a simple photo on Threads while traveling to Panama City, Florida. Sitting in the middle seat between two men, she captured what she described as a familiar in-flight experience – limited personal space.

“What it’s like sitting between two men on an airplane. And just so we’re clear, I’m in MY seat.”

The image showed Holliday keeping her legs neatly within her seat boundaries, while the two men beside her – one wearing red shorts, the other jeans – appeared to lean into her space, their legs pressing inward from both sides.

The post quickly gained traction, drawing strong reactions from users who saw it as an example of everyday discomfort many passengers experience.

Some commenters criticized the men’s posture and urged people to be more mindful of shared space. One wrote: “Listen – you claim your space in this world ALWAYS! You spread your legs to the width of your seat and do not budge and do not apologize for taking up your space in this world!” Another added: “As a man I’m deeply embarrassed by seeing this behavior as I so frequently do. Whenever I’m in a crowded or tight public space I try my hardest to make myself as small as possible.

Others took a different view, arguing that body structure plays a role and that sitting with legs fully closed can be physically uncomfortable for some men. The discussion quickly shifted beyond the image itself, touching on etiquette, personal boundaries, and the realities of cramped airline seating.

Despite the intensity of the online reactions, Holliday said the situation on the plane felt entirely different from how it was perceived.

“I just thought it was funny because I was so comfortable,” she explained. “They were like, ‘Oh, then we can be extra comfortable.’ So they were just manspreading. And so I took the photo and I was like, ‘I just want y’all to see what y’all look like.’”

Far from being a tense encounter, the moment was shared in good humor. The man in jeans can be seen laughing in the photo, while the man in red shorts — whom Holliday identified as her boyfriend — also found the situation amusing.

“He’s always close to me because I’m always cold, so I use his body heat,” she added.

Holliday said she shifted her position several times during the flight, stretched her legs, and didn’t experience any real discomfort. After sharing the image as a joke, she watched it take on a life of its own.

“I got a couple of comments and I could immediately see some people were making it a lot more than what it was to me. So I was like, let me just log off Threads. I didn’t think anything of it,” she said.

Still, she acknowledged that the same situation could feel very different under other circumstances.

“I’m usually in the window seat, but if, for whatever reason, I’m in the middle and two strangers are doing this to me, and I’m uncomfortable, it’s gonna be a problem.”
